What is a sarong?
The word ‘sarong’ or 'sarung' originated from the Malay word which translates to "covering". Typically wrapped around the waist, a sarong is a long piece of thin cloth that is traditionally worn in South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and on many Pacific islands. The fabric often has woven plaid or checkered patterns, or may be brightly colored by means of Batik (traditional floral patterns). Printed designs depicting animals or plants are often seen on many modern sarongs too.
In Malaysia, the sarong is commonly worn by both men and women alike. Malay men don the sarong when attending Friday prayers at the mosque whereas Malay women pair it with a kebaya blouse in formal settings. However, the use of the sarong is not just restricted to these settings.
Today, sarongs are also used by women across beaches all over the world as an outer garment covering for swimwear. These loose garments also conveniently act as skirts that wrap around the waist and make for comfortable, casual attire which are suitable for massages, pregnant women and as a baby carrier. Sarongs are also woven into summer dresses, skirts, bridal dresses, scarves, turbans, table or seat covers, togas, and curtains. The possibilities that arise in the use of sarongs are indeed endless!
